Sew Inspired

I feel like this little girl, with a world of textile possibilities opening up before me.

At the ripe old age of 36, despite howls of laughter from just about anyone who knows me well, I am about to take up the virtuous art of sewing. This endeavour is a testament to the triumph of hope over experience. My beautiful friend Sharon advised me to lie down and wait for the moment to pass. (I forgive her, she's seen me and my house at my worst and still loves me - that's huge!) Dave has just risen an extremely skeptical eyebrow at the very thought.

Well, boo sucks to the naysayers, I am undeterred. It might be ill-advised, but what if it turns out to be a wonderful, creative experience? I'm sure that there will be an enormous amount of frustration to begin with, but isn't everything hard before it becomes easy?

I am equal parts excited about this new challenge and terrified that I'm going to sew my finger to the machine. In order to avoid an industrial accident I've been scouring the internet for tutorials and advice. WOW!! I feel like blinders have been taken away from my eyes. I had no idea that so much fun was to be had! Okay, maybe the fun will come waaay down the track, but it appears that HEAPS of people sew all the time and truly enjoy it. Perhaps I might become one of them?
I have fallen hopelessly in love with all these fabrics and designs from Anna-Maria Horner. Her blog is divine (click). How much do you love that skirt and bag? I'm a long way off that obviously, but a girl's gotta dream.

This photo is from whatever blog's craft room (click). Looks like beautiful mess to me!

These are the cushions I made for the girls at Christmas time - this is evidence enough to encourage me that I'm not completely incompetent, just a humble beginner.

I don't think I'll be running up any dresses anytime soon. I thought I might start with soft furnishings like tablecloths and napkins, throw pillows and sewing cute stuff onto plain t-shirts. Like this:

Oooh, this could go either way - an inspiring new creative pathway or an exercise in frustration and disappointment, or maybe it'll be both! How exciting!

It's "Beautiful Life" Friday with The Inspired Room. I have posted on this topic because I think it encompasses all that is "beautiful" - the fear of failure but doing it anyway, self-confidence, learning a new skill, embracing change, hand-made loveliness for your loved ones and generally delicious eye-candy.
